The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship is a joint program of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the Department of Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, and the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. The program is a one-year ACGME approved fellowship with three fellows per year. Physicians are trained to develop critical skills to enhance a career in academic medicine or community practice. Palliative Medicine fellows work as part of interdisciplinary teams in diverse settings, and are trained by expert faculty who come from a variety of disciplines and are passionate and dedicated to the highest standards of palliative care.
The fellowship curricula includes:
- 7 months of inpatient adult palliative medicine consultation (including 1 month of pediatric pain and palliative medicine)
- 1 month at the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center
- 1½ months of inpatient hospice
- 2 months of home hospice
- a longitudinal ambulatory care experience
Fellows have an active role at all sites while working with interdisciplinary teams. One month of elective time is offered to pursue research or a clinical rotation in an area such as: ethics, radiation oncology, integrative therapies, interventional pain medicine, consultation psychiatry, pediatric oncology, geriatric medicine or neurology/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
